Papst Benedikt's Besuch in England immer wahrscheinlicher?

Offensichtlich beabsichtige Papst Benedikt nächstes Jahr Großbritannien zu besuchen, wie die Times Online vom 24. September meldete: "A central part of the visit is likely to be the beatification of Cardinal John Henry Newman, which could take place in Birmingham, where he founded his Oratory."[mehr....] Allerdings gebe es noch keine offizielle Bestätigung von beiden Seiten. "Although there was no official confirmation from Downing Street or the Holy See last night, senior government figures are confident that there will be an announcement soon.".

Nun scheint es bestätigt zu sein, wie die Times-Online 1. Oktovber 2009 schreibt: "POPE Benedict XVI is set to come to Oxford next year, with the historic visit timed to mark the beatification of the great Oxford churchman Cardinal John Henry Newman.. [...] And senior Catholics believe the Pope’s admiration for Newman means he will seek to visit places associated with the revered Catholic thinker, who had earlier been vicar of the Oxford University Church of St Mary the Virgin in the High Street.

Beatification is effectively the final rung on the ladder to sainthood. And while the beatification is expected to take place in Birmingham, where Newman founded his Oratory, the Pope may visit a number of places in Oxford where the charismatic churchman, lived and worked. [mehr....].

Nach neues Nachrichten der Times Online vom 18. September 2009 soll Papst Benedikt nächstes Jahr England besuchen anlässlich der erwarteten Seligsprechung John henry Newmans. "....the Pope is expected to visit Britain next year to mark the beatification of the Anglican convert to Catholicism, Cardinal John Henry Newman, bringing him close to becoming a fully fledged saint." I was astonished when I came across your rather peculiar view that the event of Newman’s beatification was in the first place a “celebration of Newman’s Englishness, in which we all can take pride.”

As a matter of fact Cardinal Newman has got dedicated admirers worldwide – and these rightly judge his sanctity in the common tradition of the faithful. Newman himself discovered it in reading the fathers of the church, especially in the pages of Augustine of Hippo. “For a mere sentence, the words of St. Augustine, struck me with a power which I never had felt before. Securus judicat orbis terrarum!” (Newman, APOLOGIA, Ch. III)

On October 14, 1843 John Henry Newman confided in a letter to Archdeacon (later Cardinal) Henry Edward Manning: “If there ever was a case, in which an individual teacher has been put aside and virtually put away by a community, mine is one. It is felt that I am foreign material...”

I am writing to you as a German and I would like to point out that apart from our Holy Father Benedict XVI. (“Newman was our passion”) the following names deserve our attention: Johannes Oesterreicher, Edith Stein, Romano Guardini, Reinhold Schneider, Carl Muth, Theodor Haecker, Sophie Scholl. For them Newman’s theology of conscience was a guiding light.

When back in 2005 Cardinal Clemens August von Galen was beatified, no Catholic magazine came to the conclusion that this event was a celebration of Bishop von Galen’s “Deutschtum” (i.e. Germanness), in which we all can take pride. Jakob Knab, Kaufbeuren (Germany)

Laut einem Artikel der New York Times vom 3. Juli wird John Henry Newman zusammen mit Maria Ghattas bald selig gesprochen. "The Vatican opened the path to the beatification of the 19th-century English cardinal John Henry Newman and a Palestinian nun, Maria Ghattas, after Pope Benedict XVI signed a decree, recognizing miracles attributed to the pair."
